Story

History

Established in 1977, the Bethel Land Trust is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization devoted to preserving open space and the natural resources of Bethel.

The first gift of property to BLT occurred in 1979. Since then, the land trust has received gifts of many more parcels of land. The parcels, ranging in size from less than one acre to more than 60 acres, are found throughout the town. Property now under the protection of the Land Trust exceeds 250 acres.

The Land Trust has also played a major role in developing the Enchanted Trail, a public trail blazed with diamond-shaped yellow markers that crosses Bethel from Meckauer Park in the north to Huntington Park in the south.

Mission

The mission of the Bethel Land Trust is to conserve and steward land in Bethel for walking, contemplation and enjoyment and as unspoiled habitat for plants and animals.

We do this by working with landowners to establish conservation easements, facilitate land donations and acquire land with conservation value.

A board of directors manages the land trust. As a local organization, we coordinate efforts with the region’s other land trusts and participate in a statewide land trust association organized by the Connecticut Land Conservation Council.
